05 August 2021

The Hong Kong women's table tennis team beat third-seeded Germany by 3-1 and won a historic bronze medal today. Dr Lam Tai-fai SBS JP, Chairman of the HKSI, highly praised the superb performance of the team members and believed that the medal had a great significance to the Hong Kong table tennis sector, the HKSI, the sports sector and Hong Kong. It is worthy of the public’s applause and be proud of them. The Hong Kong Delegation has attained their best ever achievement at the Tokyo Olympic Games by bagging 1 gold 2 silver 1 bronze, a total of four medals so far.

The women's table tennis team includes Doo Hoi-kem, Lee Ho-ching and Soo Wai-yam, they had defeated Brazil and Romania to reach the semi-finals. Facing Germany in the bronze medal match, they delivered their best in every game. Although they lost the doubles, they managed to sweep the German team in three straight matches in the singles finally. The bronze medal is not only the best Olympic result in history of the women's team, but also starts a new chapter for the Hong Kong table tennis sector. The players’ unremitting pursuit of goals, never-giving up and persevering spirit, constantly breaking through themselves, are indeed the glory of Hong Kong and a role model for Hong Kong youths. Dr Lam hoped they will continue to bring good news to Hong Kong in the upcoming National Games and Asian Games next year.

The HKSI will, as usual, continue to effectively use the Government resources to lead local elite sports development and it will also work closely with the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China and the National Sports Associations to bring local elite sports to a new height. Last but not least, the HKSI hopes the Government can invest more resources to develop local sports.
