HKSI and HKU SPACE Sign MOU for Elite Athletes Study Programme
The HKSI and HKU SPACE today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), aiming to provide comprehensive academic support to athletes at the HKSI, facilitating their academic growth alongside their pursuit of sporting excellence. The MOU was signed by Professor William K.M. Lee, Director of HKU SPACE and Mr Tony Choi MH, Chief Executive of the HKSI.
The 5-year agreement signifies the joint effort of HKU SPACE and the HKSI in supporting the academic development of athletes by offering integrated, flexible academic options to athletes nominated by the HKSI for admission to sports, coaching and recreation management programmes offered by HKU SPACE. Additionally, the agreement will provide mentoring support, academic guidance, and career advice to these athletes preparing for their post-athletic careers.
Speaking at the Signing Ceremony, Professor William K.M. Lee, Director of HKU SPACE, said, “We are dedicated to offering flexible academic options that will allow our athletes to balance their rigorous training with their academic pursuits, ensuring that they can excel in both areas. Our goal is to equip them with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the complexities of their careers and help them to chart their career paths through education. I am confident that together, by combining our resources, expertise, and passion for education and sports, HKU SPACE and the HKSI can create a supportive environment that empowers athletes to succeed and reach new heights of success.”
Mr Tony Choi MH, Chief Executive of the HKSI, said: “We are delighted that HKU SPACE shares the same view with the HKSI about the importance of dual career pathways. This approach enables athletes to pursue their sporting dreams while unlocking their academic potential. The collaboration will allow student athletes to train full time while continuing with their academic and personal development.”
The HKSI provides a high-quality training environment in which sport talent can be identified, nurtured and developed to pursue excellence in sport. Other than sports facilities, the support given to athletes includes elite coaching and training, sports science, sports medicine, strength and conditioning, athlete affairs and education, applied research and sports information.
