The 17-day Tokyo Olympic Games ended successfully today. Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Chief Executive Mrs Carrie Lam GBM GBS, accompanied by Mr Caspar Tsui JP, Secretary for Home Affairs, Dr Lam Tai-fai SBS JP, Chairman of the HKSI and Dr Trisha Leahy SBS BBS, Chief Executive of the HKSI, watched television live broadcast with elite athletes and staff at the HKSI, cheering for cyclist Lee Wai-sze on the Olympic closing day. Although Lee failed to enter the finals, she gave her full play to win a bronze medal. The Hong Kong Delegation completed the Olympic magical tour with flying colours, bagging 1 gold 2 silver 3 bronze, a total of six medals. This proves that Hong Kong athletes are capable of competing with the world's sporting powerhouses.

Dr Lam was very grateful to the HKSAR Chief Executive for coming to the HKSI to cheer for the athletes on the Olympic closing day. This move expresses the Chief Executive's concern for the development of elite sports and athletes. Dr Lam said, "I am very pleased that the athletes conclude the Tokyo Olympics with record-breaking results, which proves that the Government's investment on athletes is worthwhile. In addition, I am very happy that the Chief Executive takes today's opportunity to visit the construction site for the new HKSI facility building in person, proactively studying the completion of this project as early as possible."

When everyone cheered and applauded for the award-winning athletes, Dr Lam also highly praised the other Hong Kong athletes who participated in the Olympic Games. Their tenacious fighting spirit and indomitable spirit are really admirable and set a model for younger athletes.

The HKSI will, as usual, continue to effectively use the Government resources to lead local elite sports development and it will also work closely with the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China and the National Sports Associations to bring local elite sports to a new height. Last but not least, the HKSI hopes the Government could inject additional resources into local sports development.
