Historic breakthroughs and memorable title victories defined Hong Kong’s campaign at the 20th Asian Games. The team amassed 54 medals, comprising 11 gold, 19 silver and 24 bronze, setting new Hong Kong records for both the number of gold medals and overall medal tally at a single Asian Games.
Wushu athlete Sham Hui-yu opened Hong Kong’s gold medal account with victory in the women’s changquan event. Swimmer Siobhan Haughey delivered a golden double in the women’s 100m and 200m freestyle events and finished with 2 gold and 2 silver in total, the highest medal tally among Hong Kong athletes at this year’s Games. Rower Chiu Hin-chun celebrated his first Asian Games crown in the men’s lightweight single sculls event.
Hong Kong also achieved a historic one-two finish in the squash mixed doubles, with Lee Ka-yi and Tang Ming-hong taking gold ahead of teammates Lai Cheuk-nam and Tse Yee-lam. Sailing reached a major milestone as Ethan Kiu and Louis Polson triumphed in the men’s 29er event, while Chloe Kong and McCarley Wong won the women’s 29er title, earning Hong Kong’s first-ever Asian Games gold medals in the sport.
Wong Chak-lam added another chapter to Hong Kong’s sporting history by becoming the city’s first Asian Games men’s singles tennis champion. Young windsurfers Wong Tsz-ho and Cheung Tsz-yuet showcased the promise of a new generation by winning the boys’ and girls’ iQFOiL U19 events respectively. The men’s rugby sevens team further underlined its regional dominance with a third consecutive Asian Games crown.
