The Hong Kong women’s table tennis team, consisting of five home-grown players Doo Hoi-kem, Lee Ho-ching, Mak Tze-wing, Ng Wing-nam and Soo Wai-yam, enjoyed a superb run at the World Team Table Tennis Championships, defeating No.3 seed Chinese Taipei in the last 16 and European Champion Romania in the quarterfinals before losing to China 1-3 in the semifinals. In the first match against China, Soo Wai-yam pulled off the biggest surprise by upsetting Rio Olympic gold medallist Ding Ning in three straight games. With no playoff for the bronze medal, the team eventually finished third.
