Shine Tak Foundation Outstanding Junior Athlete Awards 2022 4th Quarter Winners and Annual Awards Unveiled

Cheng Tit-nam (Fencing) was presented with the Most Outstanding Junior Athlete Award. The awardees of the 4th quarter are Chu Lok-yin and Pak Hoi-man (Athletics), Deng Chi-fai and Liu Hoi-kiu (Badminton), Chan Nok-sze and Leung Ya-lei (Fencing), Chiu Chun-yin and Wong Han-yi (Karatedo), Chen Pak-hong and Jaden Li Head (Rowing), Chan Tsz-ching and Jarvis Ho (Skating), Lee Hoi-man and Mak Ming-shum (Table Tennis), Lam Lok-shi and Man Lai-ki (Triathlon), Ho Ching-hin and Tsang Cho-kiu (Wushu). Title sponsored by Shine Tak Foundation, organised by the HKSI, sponsored by the Sports for Hope Foundation and supported by the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC) and the Hong Kong Sports Press Association (HKSPA), the annual celebration and 4th quarter awards presentation ceremony of the Outstanding Junior Athlete Awards (OJAA) 2022 was held today in the HKSI, the first awards presentation ceremony in physical mode since the epidemic.

Cheng Tit-nam Presented with the Most Outstanding Junior Athlete Award

In 2022, many junior athletes achieved remarkable results in international competitions. Among them, Cheng Tit-nam (Fencing) won gold medals at the Asian Junior & Cadet Fencing Championships 2022 and the World Junior and Cadet Fencing Championships 2022, making him the second fencing athlete to receive the Most Outstanding Junior Athlete Award after Hsieh Sin-yan in 2018. Cheng said winning gold medals at the Championships was an unforgettable moment in his sporting career. He hopes to balance his fencing career and academics, and strives to participate in the Asian Games and the Olympic Games.

The Hong Kong Fencing Association, which has submitted a total of six successful nominations in 2022, was awarded the Most Supportive National Sports Association.

 

18 Q4 Awardees and 4 Athletes Received Certificate of Merit

A total of 18 junior athletes from nine sports were crowned OJAA title in the 4th quarter. The awardees are Chu Lok-yin and Pak Hoi-man (Athletics), Deng Chi-fai and Liu Hoi-kiu (Badminton), Chan Nok-sze and Leung Ya-lei (Fencing), Chiu Chun-yin and Wong Han-yi (Karatedo), Chen Pak-hong and Jaden Li Head (Rowing), Chan Tsz-ching and Jarvis Ho (Skating), Lee Hoi-man and Mak Ming-shum (Table Tennis), Lam Lok-shi and Man Lai-ki (Triathlon), Ho Ching-hin and Tsang Cho-kiu (Wushu).

Athletics athletes Chu Lok-yin and Pak Hoi-man made great achievements at the 4th Asian Youth Athletics Championships by winning a silver medal in the boys’ 800m event and a gold medal in the girls’ 100m hurdles event with their personal best record respectively. Chu Lok-yin even shattered the U18 and U20 records in Hong Kong, becoming Hong Kong’s record holder. He aspires to run within 1 minute and 50 seconds in the 800 metres.

Badminton pair Deng Chi-fai and Liu Hoi-kiu won a silver medal at the Badminton Asia U17 & U15 Junior Championships 2022 in the mixed doubles (U15) event. Liu said it was unexpected for her and her partner to overcome their nervousness and took home the medal given the tough competition with strong opponents. She will keep working hard on enhancing her fitness and skills in the training. Deng stated that he will keep working hard in training to success at the BWF World Junior Championships.

Fencer Chan Lok-sze demonstrated excellence by winning a gold medal in the women's foil event at the Women's Foil Junior World Cup. She was greatly inspired to work hard at fencing by Cheung Ka-long’s determination and persistence. Qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games is her biggest goal; Leung Ya-lei, who has been inspired by fencer Choi Chun-yin for his success in both fencing and academics, captured a bronze medal in the women’s foil individual event at the Asian Under 23 Fencing Championships 2022. She hopes to win medals at the Asian and World Junior Championships and participate more in the senior category.

Karatedo athlete Chiu Chun-yin won a silver medal in the male individual kata (junior) event at the 18th Asian Senior, 20th Asian Cadet, Junior & U21, and 1st Asian Para Karate Championship, who hopes to achieve better results in the world championships; Wong Han-yi attained the 7th place in the female cadet individual kumite -47kg at the 12th WKF Cadet, Junior and U21 World Championships 2022. She has planned to become a full-time athlete, hoping to balance her training and academics with the goal of winning medals.

Rowing athletes Chen Pak-hong and Jaden Li Head netted a silver medal in the U19 men’s double sculls at the Asian Rowing Championships 2022 & Asian Rowing Junior Championships 2022. Chen hopes to qualify for the Asian Games, while Jaden hopes to join the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Their goal is to finish in the top three of the upcoming competition in Sydney.

Skater Chan Tsz-ching brought home a bronze medal in the junior women event with her personal best record at the Asian Open Figure Skating Trophy 2022. She would like to achieve better results at the World Junior Figure Skating Championships next year and break her personal best in the coming competitions. Her ultimate goal is to participate in the Winter Olympic Games; Jarvis Ho won a gold medal in the advance novice boys event at the same competition. He would like to learn more skating skills in the coming training in Thailand to perform well at the Hong Kong Championships and Grand Prix and expect to break through his personal best and technical element score this season.

Table tennis athletes Lee Hoi-man and Mak Ming-shum’s role model is Doo Hoi-kem. Lee won two bronze medals in the U19 girls singles at the WTT Youth Contender Senec and Lignano 2022. She started playing table tennis since five years old with the goal to participate in the world championships and the Olympic Games; Mak won two gold medals in the U15 and U13 girls singles events in Jezzine. Being an athlete who brings honour to Hong Kong by continuous training and competition is her long-term goal.

Triathlon athlete Lam Lok-shi captured a silver medal in the U15 men event at the Asia Triathlon Youth Championships 2022. He will work hard in training and accumulate experience, hoping to represent Hong Kong at the Asian Games; Man Lai-ki won a bronze medal in the U15 women event at the same competition. She will set personal goals in terms of strategy, tactics, fitness and psychology, aiming to join the Olympic Games. Their upcoming competition is the 2023 Asia Triathlon Cup Subic Bay, where they target to place in the top three.

Wushu athletes Ho Ching-hin and Tsang Cho-kiu both delivered solid performance at the 8th World Junior Wushu Championships. Ho Ching-hin won a gold and a silver medals in the boys’ group B jianshu and boys’ group B qiangshu events respectively. He intends to be a full-time athlete and has already started to prepare for coming competitions; Tsang Cho-kiu captured two gold medals in the girls’ group B nanquan and nangun events by both reaching her personal best. Her target is to get a better result at the Asian and World Junior Championships in next two years.

In addition, four athletes were awarded the Certificate of Merit for this quarter, including Tong Hoi-kiu (Mountaineering), Mak Sai-ting (Swimming), Chan Kwok-ting and Tang Ki-cheong (Tennis), while Huang Ziyan (Sailing) was presented with the Certificate of Appreciation to recognise her hard work.

Organised by the HKSI, with support from the SF&OC and the HKSPA, the OJAA recognises the achievements of outstanding local junior athletes under the age of 19 on a quarterly basis. Each awardee is presented with a cash prize of HK$5,000, a sports voucher worth HK$2,500 and a certificate. For teams, they will receive a cash award of HK$20,000, a sport voucher worth HK$10,000 and certificates.
