The Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), Mr John Lee Ka-chiu GBM SBS PDSM PMSM announced today in the 2026 Policy Address that the Government will support the HKSI in launching the Sports Executive Training Programme (Programme), with the aim of expanding the career ladder of retired athletes.

Mr Tang King-shing GBS PDSM, Chairman of the HKSI, expressed gratitude to the Government for its support of the initiative and said, “With the Government’s support, the HKSI has for many years equipped athletes for life beyond competition through a range of education, vocational and personal development programmes. The Sports Executive Training Programme represents an important extension of these efforts.”

“The Programme not only broadens career pathways for retired athletes, but also aligns with the Government’s policy direction of enhancing professionalism in sport by developing sports executives who possess both elite sporting experience and management capability, thereby strengthening the talent pipeline to support the sustainable development of sport in Hong Kong.”

Mr Tang concluded, “The HKSI will actively take forward the Programme and continue to uphold its athlete-centred approach, providing holistic support to athletes at different stages of their lives and helping them pursue excellence and realise their full potential. As the Hong Kong, China Delegation prepares to compete at the Asian Games and the Asian Para Games, I wish all athletes every success and hope they will perform to the best of their abilities and make Hong Kong proud.”

In addition, Mr Tang also supports the Government's initiative to explore the redevelopment of Victoria Park Centre Court and other ancillary facilities into an iconic all-weather, multi-purpose venue, “Upgrading Victoria Park Tennis Court into an international-standard centre venue will support the hosting of larger-scale and higher-level sports events in Hong Kong, giving elite athletes more opportunities to train and compete in major events on home ground where they can fully showcase their talents.”
