BSU Students Honoured with Scholarships from the Hongkong Bank Foundation

Six students of the Bachelor of Education in Sports Training Programme (the Programme) were presented with Scholarships totalling HK$30,000 offered by the Hongkong Bank Foundation (HBF) for their outstanding academic achievements in the 2010/2011 academic year.

The scholarship recipients include wushu athlete Zheng Tianhui who won a silver medal in the Guangzhou Asian Games, athletics (HKSAM) coach Cheung Kin-fun who was also the recipient of the 2009 and 2010 HBF Coaching Awards - Coaching Excellence Awards, as well as basketball coach Hui Wai-man who has received this Scholarships for the third consecutive years. Leung Wing-kai, a basketball coach and being honoured with HBF Coaching Awards - Community Coach Recognition Awards in 2007, Chui Siu-kei, a fireman and a part-time coach and Chan Chi-ching, a coach in Muay Thai, were also presented with scholarships.

Organised by the Beijing Sport University (BSU) and the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) being responsible for the administration work, the Programme is a unique five-year part-time bachelor degree course in sports training education in Hong Kong. It consists of 25 modules including sports anatomy, exercise physiology, statistics in sports, sports nutrition, sports-specific theory and practicum, etc. Students will be granted a Bachelor degree upon successful completion of all requirements and the qualification is equivalent to students who attained their Degrees in the Mainland and is widely recognised by other countries.

Tang Hon-sing, a BSU graduate in 2004 and a former Hong Kong Athletics Team member, who squeezed time out of his busy schedule and gave encouragement to his fellow schoolmates in the first assembly. "I thoroughly understand the difficulties that all of you have encountered when you have to take care of both training/ working and university study at the same time. However, I've never thought of giving up as I really treasure this golden opportunity to enrich my knowledge. At the end, I can make it, and I do believe all of you can do the same," Tang said.

Being under the General Administration of Sport of China, BSU is the key national tertiary education institutions and has educated more than 40 Olympic champions and over a hundred world champions. The Programme has also nurtured many elite athletes and professional coaches in Hong Kong with a total of 58 students had completed the course since its first intake in 1999. Graduates include Chiang Wai-hung and To Wai-lok (athletics), Choi Fong-yue (basketball), Ho Siu-lun (cycling), Wan Shu-wah (triathlon), as well as Chan Siu-kit, Cheng Ka-ho, To Yu-hang and Angie Tsang (wushu). Current students include Leung Chun-wai, Tang Yik-chun and Tsui Chi-ho (athletics), Sze Hang-yu (swimming) and Cheng Chung-hang and Leung Man-chun (wushu).

The HBF has been committing to local coach education programmes by contributing more than HK$26 million to fund the Hong Kong Coach Education Programmes since 1992, and has been offering scholarships to students of the BSU Programme starting from 2000.
