HKBU Joins Hands with Hong Kong Sports Institute to Provide Quality Chinese Medicine Treatment for Elite Athletes

Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) today (4 May) signed a memorandum of understanding with the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) to explore the application of Chinese medicine on elite sports training, injury and strength recovery amid the increasing demand of the elite athletes on Chinese medicine treatment.

Officiating at the memorandum signing and an opening ceremony of “Elite Athletes Chinese Medicine Specialty Clinic” were Tang Kwai-nang, Vice-Chairman of the HKSI, Dr Trisha Leahy, Chief Executive of the HKSI, Professor Ng Ching-fai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU, Professor Frank Fu, Associate Vice-President of HKBU and Professor Liu Liang, Dean of the School of Chinese Medicine of HKBU.

Speaking at the ceremony, Tang Kwai-nang said, “The HKSI-HKBU cooperation comes at the right timing as our elite athletes are busy preparing for the Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games.  The cooperation is also of particular importance as elite athletes will be assured of quality Chinese treatment from now on.  We hope that through the robust care by the Chinese medicine professionals at HKBU, our athletes can achieve excellence at the Games.”

Professor Ng Ching-fai said that through the cooperation, HKBU hopes to contribute to the development of sports Chinese medicine as well as to enhance the role and status of Chinese medicine in sports medicine and healthcare services in Hong Kong, which will benefit more athletes in Hong Kong.

Also speaking at the event were Dr Trisha Leahy and Professor Liu Liang. Elite athletes including table tennis player Li Ching and rower Lee Ka-man as well as recently retired badminton player Wang Chen shared their experience on Chinese medicine treatment.

The cooperation guarantees the elite athletes of the HKSI of quality and safe Chinese medicine treatment from the School of Chinese Medicine, HKBU are helping them to avoid taking banned substances accidentally.  The cooperation also offers more treatment options to athletes and to supplement the current medical treatment they received. In return, the HKSI will join hands with HKBU to research on the application and integration of Chinese medicine treatment with sports science on elite sports training.  The HKBU Mr & Mrs Chan Hon Yin Chinese Medicine Specialty Clinic and Good Clinical Practice Centre was designated as the “Elite Athletes Chinese Medicine Specialty Clinic”.

The event also kicked off the “Chinese Medicine Healthcare Plan preparing veteran athletes for the Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games” which aims to enhance the medal hope of experienced athletes through a tailor-made healthcare plan.
