Hong Kong Sports Institute and Hang Seng offer cash incentives to HK medallists at 12th National Games

31 July 2013

The Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) and Hang Seng Bank are delighted to announce that achievements by Hong Kong athletes at the 12th National Games will be rewarded under the Hang Seng Athlete Incentive Awards Scheme (Scheme).

Expressing his appreciation for Hang Seng’s long-standing partnership, Mr Carlson Tong JP, Chairman of the HKSI, said, “We are excited to be working with Hang Seng again this year.  The Scheme provides local athletes with great encouragement and recognition, and we thank Hang Seng for supporting athletes and sports development over the years.  We look forward to seeing Hong Kong athletes triumph in events at the National Games.”

Ms Rose Lee, Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive of Hang Seng Bank, said, “Hong Kong’s athletes continue to demonstrate great determination and drive in striving for sporting excellence.   We are proud to be working with our long-term partner, HKSI, to reward the achievements of our city’s medallists at the 12th National Games.  We offer our warmest wishes to the entire Hong Kong delegation and look forward to watching our athletes give their best and achieve outstanding results.”

Under the Scheme, any Hong Kong athlete who wins a gold medal in an individual event will be awarded a cash incentive of HK$300,000, while silver and bronze medallists will receive HK$150,000 and HK$60,000 respectively.  Teams that win gold, silver and bronze medals will be presented with cash awards of HK$420,000, HK$240,000 and HK$120,000 respectively.

Initiated by the HKSI in 1994, the Scheme has been sponsored by Hang Seng since 1996.  The Scheme provides cash incentives to Hong Kong athletes who achieve outstanding performances at the Olympic Games, the Paralympic Games and the National Games.   The Scheme was expanded in 2005 to include medallists at the East Asian Games and, in 2010, medallists at the Asian Games and the Asian Para Games, to further support the development of local sport.  The Scheme has given out more than HK$30 million to about 360 top-performing Hong Kong athletes since 1996.

The 12th National Games will be held from 31 August to 12 September 2013 in Liaoning, China.   This year’s games will include 31 different sports and over 1,000 medals will be presented.
