Preparing Athletes for Major Games

The unprecedented achievement of Mainland China in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games has positioned China as one of the world sports powerhouses. To share the successful experiences in preparing athletes for the Beijing Olympics, the Hong Kong Sports Institute is organising an exchange forum, with speakers from the General Administration of Sport of China and four major Mainland sports institutions, to be held on Saturday, 30 May at the Hong Kong Exhibition and Convention Centre.

The forum is co-organised by the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China, and The Hong Kong Jockey Club Sports Medicine and Health Sciences Centre. Topics will start from the framework of training strategies and sport science and medicine support to athletes for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, and extend the scope of discussion to Hong Kong's experiences in preparing athletes for the upcoming major games, including the 2009 East Asian Games. Keynote presentations will be followed by an open forum to enhance the exchange of expertise and insight in better preparing Hong Kong's elite athletes to succeed on the world stage.

The sports injuries handbook : diagnosis and management

The handbook was published by A&C Black in 2007 and written by Professor Christer Rolf, a leading sports injuries surgeon in the Sheffield Centre for Sports Medicine in the UK. It outlines the benefits and risks of common training methods, sports and exercises, as a rehabilitation method for patients with sports injuries. It provides, in the second part of the book, introduction, treatment method and prognosis for common sports injuries relating to foot, ankle, lower leg, knee, thigh and groin, wrist and hand, and elbow and shoulder. The book is well-illustrated and logical in its layout. It is an ideal reference for those involved in sports injury treatment, as well as coaches and athletes.
 
Sports medicine for sports trainers (9th edition)

This book is published by Sports Medicine Australia in 2007, a peak advisory body on all sports-related medical and health issues. It contains basic concepts of sports medicine. The ninth edition is easy-to-read, with up-to-date color photographs and diagrams. Contents include: roles of sports trainers, introduction of human anatomy, principles of nutrition and drugs in sports, common sports injury management and using sports taping to prevent and reduce serious injuries. It provides useful information for athletes to reduce the occurrence of injuries and introduces different kinds of treatment.
