International Results

As a result of the continuing impact of the pandemic, the Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games, and the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou and the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Para Games were postponed to 2023, with the official names remaining unchanged. For those competitions that were held, Hong Kong athletes continued their impressive performances. Amongst the positive results recorded were the attainment of world number one rankings in boccia, fencing and Para badminton. Throughout the year, a total of 141 medals were won at the World Championships, the Asian Championships and other international competitions, including 25 gold.

Billiard Sports

Billiard sports athlete Li Langyi won a silver medal in the boys’ U17 event at the World Junior 9-Ball Championships 2022.

Boccia

The Hong Kong boccia team won three bronze medals at the Boccia World Championships 2022. World number one Ho Yuen-kei captured bronze in the women’s BC3 individual event, and partnered Tse Tak-wah to take bronze in the mixed BC3 event, while Cheung Yuen won a bronze medal in the women’s BC4 individual event.

Fencing

World number one Cheung Ka-long took bronze in the men’s foil individual event at the World Fencing Championships 2022, becoming the first male fencer from Hong Kong to win a medal at the World Championships. Kong Man-wai collected her second World Championships bronze medal in the women’s epee individual event, after achieving the feat for the first time in 2019.

Cheng Tit-nam won gold in the boy's foil individual event, while Chen Hailin took bronze in the girl's epee individual (cadet) event at the World Junior and Cadet Fencing Championships 2022.

Para Badminton

The Hong Kong Para badminton team brought home 1 gold and 2 bronze medals from the BWF Para Badminton World Championships 2022. Chu Man-kai achieved the world number one ranking after winning gold in the men’s singles SH6 event. He partnered with Wong Chun-yim to take bronze in the men’s doubles SH6 event, while Chan Ho-yuen won a bronze medal in the men’s singles WH2 event.

Para Table Tennis

The Hong Kong Para table tennis women’s doubles pairing of Ng Mui-wui and Wong Ting-ting won gold in the WD22 event at the ITTF World Para Table Tennis Championships 2022.

Swimming

Siobhan Haughey defended her women’s 200m freestyle title and also took silver in the 100m freestyle event at the 16th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m).

At the 8th FINA World Junior Swimming Championships, Mak Sai-ting won bronze in the men’s 200m breaststroke event, becoming the first male athlete from Hong Kong to win a medal at the World Junior Swimming Championships.

Tennis

Wong Chak-lam made history at the 2022 US Open Tennis Championships, after becoming the first Hong Kong junior tennis player to reach the boys’ singles semi-finals at a Grand Slam.

Wheelchair Fencing

Wheelchair fencer Chow Long-ho won a silver medal in the men's epee individual category A/B event at the IWAS Wheelchair Fencing U23 World Championships.

Wushu

The Hong Kong wushu team delivered an outstanding performance at the 8th World Junior Wushu Championships, bringing home 5 gold, 6 silver and 5 bronze. The gold medallists included Chow Tsz-tung, Ho Ching-hin, Tsang Cho-kiu and Remus Wong.

HKSAR Government 2022 Honours List

In recognition of their significant contributions to Hong Kong, the HKSI Chairman, six HKSI Head Coaches and coaches, and 17 HKSI Scholarship Athletes were named in the HKSAR Government’s 2022 Honours List.

Ten Outstanding Young Persons Selection 2022

Fencer Cheung Ka-long and table tennis athletes Doo Hoi-kem, Lee Ho-ching and Soo Wai-yam were named awardees of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons Selection 2022 in recognition of their achievements in sport and contribution to the community.

Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards 2022

The Cathay 2022 Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards Presentation Ceremony, organised by the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC), was held on 18 April 2023 to recognise local athletes for their outstanding performance at major international competitions in 2022. Fencer Cheung Ka-long and swimmer Siobhan Haughey were named “Best of the Best Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards for Men/Women”.

A total of 96 nominations were received from 46 National Sports Associations (NSAs). Winners were selected by votes from the judging panel, the sports media and the public.

Outstanding Junior Athlete Awards 2022

A total of 31 junior athletes received the Outstanding Junior Athlete Awards (OJAA) in recognition of their outstanding performances in 2022. Among them, Cheng Tit-nam achieved remarkable results at international competitions in 2022 and became the second fencer to be awarded the Most Outstanding Junior Athlete Award. The Hong Kong Fencing Association was named the Most Supportive National Sports Association.

Title sponsored by Shine Tak Foundation, organised by the HKSI, and sponsored by the Sports for Hope Foundation, with support from SF&OC and the Hong Kong Sports Press Association, the OJAA recognises the achievements of outstanding local junior athletes under the age of 19 on a quarterly basis.
