Hong Kong athletes win 17 medals in swimming and athletics at the 1st Asian Indoor Games

At the 1st Asian Indoor Games held on 12 ¡V 19 November in Bangkok, Thailand, the Hong Kong swimming team won 8 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze medals and the women's swimming team set 6 new Hong Kong records including: 50m freestyle, 50m butterfly, 50m breaststroke, 100m individual medley, 4x100m freestyle relay and 4x100m medley relay. In athletics, sprinter Tang Yik-chun won a gold medal in the men's 60m race.

A total of 34 athletes competed in 9 events at this year's Asian Indoor Games.


Table tennis athletes Tie Yana and Zhang Rui win their sixth women's doubles title of the 2005 ITTF Pro Tour at the Liebherr Swedish Open

Table tennis athletes Tie Yana and Zhang Rui won the ITTF Pro Tour women's doubles title for the sixth time this year, at the Liebherr Swedish Open held on 20 November in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Lin Ling and Song Ah-sim won a silver medal in the women's double while Tie Yana won a silver medal in the women's singles.

Wushu athletes win 5 medals at the 8 th World Wushu Championships

Wushu athletes won 2 gold and 3 silver medals at the 8 th World Wushu Championships held on 8 ¡V 15 December in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Angie Tsang and Cheng Ka-ho won a gold medal in the women's nangun event and in the men's nangun. The three silver medals were won by Angie Tsang in the women's nandao, by Cheng Chung-hang in the men's gunshu, and by Wong Wun-yee, Ho Pak-kei and Law Sum-yin in women's dual events.

Exchange and Visits

Mainland and overseas visitors of the Hongkong Bank Foundation Elite Coaches Seminar/ Coaching Directors Forum tour HKSI

Mainland and overseas speakers and participants of the Hongkong Bank Foundation Elite Coaches Seminar/ Coaching Directors Forum took the opportunity to tour the HKSI facilities on 2 ¡V 3 December. The Seminar was held at the HKSI during the same time.

Visitors included three of the Seminar speakers: Stevenson Lai, Assistant Director (Coaching Policies & Technical Development), Sports Management & Development Group of the Singapore Sports Council; Jose Carpio, Technical Consultant of the Philippine Sports Commission; and Glenn Beringen, Performance Development Coordinator of Swimming Australia, Australia. A 12-member delegation headed by Zhang Tian-bai, Vice General Director of the Science and Education, Department of the All-China Sports Federation who participated in the Seminar also joined the tour.

HKSI representatives at the launch of the ASPIRE Academy for Sports Excellence and the official unveiling of Doha indoor sports dome

Dr Trisha Leahy, Head, Athlete and Scientific Services and Rene Appel, Head Windsurfing Coach, represented the HKSI at the launch of the ASPIRE Academy for Sports Excellence, and the official unveiling of the world's largest indoor sports dome in Doha, Qatar on 17 ¡V 19 November. Dr Leahy presented an invited lecture and participated in an Expert Panel Discussion. The launch was also attended by some of the world's top sporting legends, such as Maradonna, Pele, and Nadia Comaneci, among others. Doha is the site of the 2006 Asian Games.

Congratulations to HKSI staff for success in the 2005 Corporate Games

The HKSI team of 50 staff competed in 9 events ¡V badminton, basketball, indoor rowing, orienteering, soccer, squash, swimming, tenpin bowling and volleyball - in the 2005 Corporate Games held between September 2005 and January 2006. The HKSI c aptured 3 titles out of 7 semifinals. The Corporate Games is a sport promotional activity organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department for the employers and employees of local private and public organisations.

The complete guide to sports nutrition (fourth edition)

Written by Anita Bean and published by The Lyons Press in 2004, the book provides guidance for athletes on how to maximise endurance, strength and performance through nutrition. The book sets out applicable menus and recipes, eating plans and nutritional information to improve athletes' nutrition programmes. It also contains chapters on nutrition specifically for women and vegetarians. It is a comprehensive reference for athletes and coaches.
