July 2005

The Secretary for Home Affairs set up a Joint Task Force to review the provision of facilities at the HKSI and recommend a redevelopment plan for the HKSI.

 

October 2006

The Chief Executive of the HKSAR announced that the Government had earmarked funding to embark on the HKSI redevelopment.

 

November 2006

The HKSI Redevelopment Project Steering Committee (“PSC”) was formed.  For details, please click here.

 

March - April 2007

A series of stakeholders consultations were held, with unanimous support for the redevelopment project to proceed according to a two-phase schedule of works. For details, please click here.

 

October 2007

The Architectural Lead Consultant and Quantity Surveying Consultant were appointed to proceed with the preparatory works.

 

December 2007 - January 2008

A series of briefing sessions were held with key stakeholders who expressed support for the sketch design of the Project.

 

February 2008

The Culture, Sports and Community Development Committee (CSCDC) of the Sha Tin District Council was consulted.  Members of the CSCDC welcomed the Project as the new and enhanced facilities at the redeveloped HKSI would benefit the Sha Tin District and the wider community.

 

March 2008

Members of the Sham Shui Po District Council and the District Facilities Management Committee of the Tai Po District Council were updated on the latest position in respect of the Project.

 

June 2008

The Public Works Sub-Committee of Finance Committee of the Legislative Council endorsed the HKSI redevelopment project.  For details, please refer to the related Discussion Paper and Minutes.

The Finance Committee of the Legislative Council approved the funding for the main works of the Project. 

 

October 2008

Chief Executive of the HKSAR reiterated Government's support to the Project.

 

March 2009

Officiated by the Secretary for Home Affairs Mr Tsang Tak-sing, the Ground Breaking Ceremony was held at the HKSI Fo Tan venue, marking the commencement of construction works of the redevelopment project.

Phase one works, including the refurbishment of the existing indoor sports complex and the construction of a temporary velodrome at Whitehead, are planned to complete in the first quarter of 2010.

November 2009

The HKSI Board of Directors and members of the HKSI Redevelopment Project Steering Committee visited the HKSI headquarters at Fo Tan and the temporary velodrome at Whitehead on 3 November to understand the progress of works. Please visit the photo highlights for details.

Accompanied by some HKSI Board of Directors, another site visit was arranged on 19 November for the Secretary for Home Affairs Tsang Tak-sing, and members of the Sports Commission and Elite Sports Committee, where they were updated with the latest progress of the HKSI redevelopment project. May 2010

Officiated by the Secretary for Home Affairs Tsang Tak-sing, the HKSI Soft Opening was held on 31 May 2010 at the HKSI Fo Tan venue, together with more than 100 guests from the Government, Sha Tin District Council, sports sector, sponsors, partners, elite athletes, coaches and media, to celebrate the soft opening of the HKSI and tour the upgraded and expanded facilities.
